Elmer Evers, 81, of Comfrey died April 6, 2018, at his home in Comfrey.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey with Pastor Jerome Klotz officiating.
Special music will be provided by Vicki Walechka, pianist.
Honorary bearers will be Leroy Peterson, Dave Schiller, Wayne Redman, Duane Krueger and Charlie Herrig.
Burial will be at a later date at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in rural Comfrey.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 4 to 7 p.m., at New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey and continue Thursday at the church for one hour prior to the service.
Elmer James Evers was born July 6, 1936, to Harm and Bena (Stadtlander) Evers at Mt. Lake Hospital. He grew up on a farm in Selma Township and attended country school until fifth grade. He graduated from Comfrey High School in 1954.
Elmer farmed in the Comfrey area his entire life and also worked as a janitor and school bus driver for Comfrey Public Schools.
He has three children from his first marriage: Carrie, Bryon and Brenda.
In 1973, Elmer married Jane (Wilson) at Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey. They were blessed with three children: Chad, Greg and Kathy.
A longtime member of Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey, and later New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey, Elmer held several leadership positions in the churches over the years.
He also was a Super Rocket supporter and Friend of Education.
He enjoyed fishing, traveling, playing dominoes, listening to polka music, dancing and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Evers; brothers-in-law, Wayne Caraway, Ben Christianson and Armin Schenk; a nephew, Curtis Evers; a great-nephew, Andrew Holland; and a great-niece, Tiffany Nelson.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jane Evers of Comfrey; children: Carrie (Tom) Werner of Redwood Falls, Bryon (Jennifer) Evers of Hawarden, Iowa, Brenda (John) Hoek of Sioux Falls, Chad (Kristina) Evers of Marshall, Greg (Kristi) Evers of Sartell and Kathy (Bill) Jardine of Mondovi, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings: Doris Caraway of Mt. Lake; Clara Schenk of Butterfield; Walter (Marie) Evers, Irene (Eugene) Zimmermann and Richard (Susan) Evers, all of Comfrey; and David (Sharon) Evers of Jeffers; and a sister-in-law, Carol Evers of Lakota, Iowa.
