5/23/2018 9:14:00 AM Bicycle patrol, radar trailer among successful additions
As a community, we recently recognized National Police Week, May 13-19. As this week's Citizen guest columnist, I appreciate the opportunity to let the public know more about several of the Windom Police Department's summer initiatives and also to remind our Windom residents what National Police Week is really all about. The bicycle patrol As you may recall, last summer the Windom Police Department introduced our bicycle patrol to the community. It was very successful and through their experiences on the bicycle patrol, our officers made many positive citizen contacts. The patrol also proved effective in other police actions such as stopping a motorist for DWI, catching individuals lighting off fireworks and searching for a suspect who ran from law enforcement. This patrol will again be visible throughout Windom during the spring, summer and fall of 2018 and we believe that it will be an even bigger success. Portable radar trailer Our portable radar trailer is also a relatively new addition to the community. You may have seen it set up at various locations in the community. We like the fact that the unit is extremely mobile. And, consequently, we encourage residents to contact us if they believe that extra speed enforcement is needed in their neighborhood. What some residents may not know is that the trailer has a computer inside of it that provides us with extra data to determine if extra patrols are warranted in that particular neighborhood. It is our hope that the mere presence of the radar trailer will also help slow down motorists. Purpose of Police Week I should also point out that National Police Week is about remembering the officers who gave their lives to protect us. All too often, we are confronted with the reality of officers being killed in the line of duty. During this week, we owe it to these brave officers and their families to remember the sacrifice they made.
