Section 3A Meet Two area athletes will head to the Class A State Track and Field Meet on June 8-9 at Hamline University after their performances at the Section 3A Meet, held Thursday in Montevideo.
Windom freshman Delaney Smith was the section champion in the girls shot put. Smith surpassed the state qualifying standard on her first throw of the competition and wound up with a winning throw of 41-2½.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central senior Nathan Runck will also make the trek to St. Paul after finishing second in the boys 3,200-meter run. Runck led much of the race before being passed on the final lap. He finished with a time of 10:19.83, comfortably in second place.
Windom Windom's girls had a pair of third-place finishers at the section meet.
Freshman Jadyn Wormstadt placed third in the high jump, clearing 4-10. There were three competitors who all missed their attempts at 5-0, but Hannah Schjenken of Redwood Valley advanced to state as the runner-up due to fewer attempts at previous heights.
Freshman Gracie Bucher finished third in the 800-meter run. Bucher entered the second lap in fifth place and made a strong charge at the end, but could not catch up to the race leaders.
In addition to her win in the shot put, Smith also placed fifth in the discus (107-4).
Senior Emily Steen added a seventh-place finish in the discus (99-8). Junior Lindsay Muller was seventh in the 100 hurdles (17.21). The 4x800 relay team of Lucy Stevens, Wormstadt, Xyla Kolander and Bucher finished sixth (10:53.40).
The Eagle boys also had one third-place finisher at the meet. Andres Cazares-Reyes finished third in the shot put (46-4½), finishing fewer than three inches behind the section runner-up.
The team of Daniel Green, Eathan Wilson, Patrick Green and Cameron Alm finished fifth in the 4x800 relay (8:57.85). The relay team of Jabari Carlton, Dakota Scott, Josh Samdal and Wyatt Minion placed sixth in both the 4x100 (47.23) and 4x200 relays (1:38.21).
MLA The MLA girls had only one section medalist. Senior Jenneel Rodney finished seventh in the shot put (32-11).
The MLA boys had one third-place finish at the meet. The team of A.J. Vongsy, Kris Menken, Sam Paulson and Reynaldo Capetillo placed third in the 4x200 relay (1:36.20).
The team of Vongsy, Devin Phetsomphou, Paulson and Capetillo finished fourth in the 4x100 relay (46.75).
Sophomore Emilio Garcia de la Cruz finished sixth in the 3,200 (11:00.45). Sophomore Paulson took sixth in the 300 hurdles (44.90).
WWG/RRC The WWG/RRC girls were led by senior Lina Vue, who finished third in the pole vault (8-5).
Sophomore Camryn Bunting added a fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (17.21).
In addition to Runck's finish for the Charger boys, junior Cody Willard placed fifth in both the 100 (11.33) and 200 (23.28). Junior Dalton Piotter placed sixth in the 1,600 (4:58.76). And the relay team of Runck, Piotter, Ken Celedon and Gabe Krick finished fourth in the 4x800 relay (8:46.30).
