Windom 000 000 0 = 0-5-1 Luverne 100 000 x = 1-4-1 The Windom Eagle baseball team opened the Section 3AA playoffs with a win Saturday, but dropped a heartbreaker at Luverne to fall into the elimination bracket.
In the opener, the Eagles claimed a 9-2 victory over Jackson County Central.
The Eagles held the lead from the start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Quiring hit an RBI single. Kobe Lovell then lofted a two-run home run down the right field line and Noah Kloss hit an RBI double.
Windom pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fifth on an RBI single from Quiring. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles put the game away with four runs. Kade Sammons hit an RBI single, Quiring hit an RBI double and scored on the back end of a double steal.
Quiring led the Eagles with three hits and three RBI. Kloss added three hits and Luke Gilbertson had two hits.
Lovell earned the pitching win, working the first six innings. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out nine.
In the nightcap, missed opportunities haunted the Eagles in a 1-0 loss to top-seeded Luverne.
Windom left the bases loaded in the top of the first and left runners at third base in three other innings.
Luverne scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first as Lovell, starting his second game of the day, allowed a walk and three straight hits before Gilbertson came on, eventually coaxing a pop-up and a strikeout to end the threat.
Luverne did not have a runner reach third base the rest of the way, but eight runners left on base proved costly for the Eagles.
Alex Borsgard had two of the Eagles' five hits in the game.
Lovell took the pitching loss, working the first one-third of an inning.
RRC/WWG 120 200 0 = 5-6-6 Minneota 040 217 x = 14-7-1 Walks and errors proved too much for Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove to overcome Saturday as the Falcons were knocked out of the Section 3A playoffs 14-5 at Minneota.
RRC/WWG jumped to an early lead, scoring on a first-inning sacrifice fly from Jonah Hansen, then adding a two-run Austin Irlbeck double in the top of the third.
But Minneota answered with four runs in the second, taking a 4-3 lead.
The Falcons regained the lead at 5-4 in the top of the fourth on a two-run Mason Irlbeck double. But Minneota answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and a single run in the fifth.
The Vikings then put the game out of reach, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Austin Irlbeck and Mason Irlbeck each had a pair of hits for the Falcons.
Nathan Knutson took the pitching loss, working three innings in relief.
