Willaby takes third, Borsgard fifth Two Windom-Mt. Lake wrestlers came home with hardware over the weekend after placing at the Class A State Tournament, held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
At 113 pounds, sophomore Brett Willaby claimed third place in the tournament. Willaby began the tournament with a 14-4 major decision win over Gabe Geiser of New York Mills. Willaby then won a 17-3 major decision over Carter Jonsagaard of Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson.
In Saturday's semifinals, Willaby took his only loss of the tournament, falling 8-2 to eventual state champion Ben Naddy of Ottertail Central.
Willaby rebounded with a 12-4 major decision win over Michael Miller of Frazee before claiming a 13-4 win over Jonsagaard to place third.
At 138 pounds, junior Alex Borsgard opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Jonathan Tostenson of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg. Borsgard then claimed a 3-1 win over Payton Schiefelbein of Kimball to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Borsgard dropped a 12-7 decision to Gage Zieske of Osakis. Borsgard then fell 9-7 in overtime to Owen Novacek of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River to drop into the fifth-place match. There, he defeated Owen Bjerga of Staples-Motley 16-7 to earn a fifth-place medal.
At 145 pounds, junior Zach Spinks dropped a 5-3 overtime decision in the opening round to Lukas Meier of Crookston. Spinks was then pinned by Tyler Spolarich of Aitkin in 2:50, ending the tournament with an 0-2 record.
Altermatt claims third Wabasso-Red Rock Central had one medalist from the Class A State Wrestling Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Senior Nick Altermatt opened the tournament by pinning Tim Lewis of Sibley East in 3:42. Altermatt then advanced to the semifinals by defeating Joe Dezelar of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River by injury default.
The semifinals were a rematch of the Section 3A finals, which Altermatt won. This time, though, Jaiden Kindopp of Canby claimed a 4-2 victory over Altermatt on his way to the state title.
Altermatt regrouped, winning a 2-1 decision over Kaleb O'Reilly of Goodhue to advance to the third-place match. There, he earned a 3-1 win over Colton Waldvogel of Osakis.
At 160 pounds, junior Jared Schroepfer opened the tournament with a heartbreaking 14-10 loss to Matt Ziebell of Pelican Rapids. Schroepfer was then eliminated from the tournament when Ziebell lost to Colton Krell of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 12-4 in the second round.
