Hadley 001 102 020 = 6-8-0 Windom 000 000 010 = 1-4-4 The Windom Pirates were pushed to the brink of elimination from the Region 13C playoffs Wednesday night after a 6-1 loss to the Hadley Buttermakers at Island Park.
With the win, Hadley took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series to determine the third seed to advance to the Class C State Tournament out of Region 13C. The loser of the series is eliminated.
The Pirates skated around danger in the first two innings as a pair of early errors didn't come back to haunt. But Windom wasn't as fortunate in the top of the third, when a walk and a pair of errors allowed Hadley to score the game's first run without the benefit of a hit.
Hadley stretched the lead to 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI single from Joe Larsen, then added two runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Larsen.
Hadley pushed its lead to 6-0 in the top of the eighth with a pair of RBI singles.
The Pirates, meanwhile, never got the offense going. Worthington draftee Nick Henning held the Pirates to four hits and struck out 17.
Windom got its first baserunner of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single from Collin Lovell.
The Pirates finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Jack Mellstrom reached on an infield single, took second on a groundout and scored on a two-out Danny Kneeland single.
Derek Shoen, the Pirates' draftee from the Martin County Foxes, took the pitching loss, allowing four runs on three hits in six innings. He walked five and struck out six.
Game two of the series will be played Saturday in Hadley, beginning at 2 p.m. If the Pirates win, it would force a deciding third game, which would be played Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hadley.
In the first game of the Region 13C championship series, which was played Thursday after being postponed Wednesday night due to rain, Fairmont defeated Milroy 10-0 in seven innings. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Milroy Irish Yard.
