Windom 000 001 000 3 = 4-11-2 Pipestone 100 000 000 0 = 1-1-4 The Windom Pirates received another dominant pitching performance and had clutch hitting in the top of the 10th inning Wednesday, defeating the Pipestone A's 4-1 in the opening game of the Region 13C best-of-three series at Pipestone.
Pipestone struck in the bottom of the first. Danny Moffitt reached on an error, advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a double by Tyler Rieck.
After that, Pirate pitcher Collin Lovell dominated the A's lineup, retiring 27 straight batters until a two-out walk in the bottom of the 10th inning. Lovell finished allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 18.
The Pirates tied the game in the top of the sixth. Luke Gilbertson led off the inning with a single and scored on a deep double from Devin Nielsen. Nielsen was later thrown out at the plate trying to score on an infield grounder by Jacob Johnson.
The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the top of the 10th. Danny Kneeland hit a one-out double and advanced to third on a Luke Gilbertson single. With runners at the corners and two outs, Nielsen lofted a two-run double to right-center field, giving the Pirates the lead. Johnson then blooped a single to left-center, giving Windom a 4-1 lead.
Lovell allowed a two-out walk in the bottom of the 10th before recording a strikeout to end the game.
Gilbertson and Nielsen each had three hits in the Pirate win. Kneeland finished with two hits.
The seventh-seeded Pirates will try to close out a sweep of the second-seeded A's Friday at Island Park. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
If Pipestone wins Friday's game, the deciding third game of the series will be played Sunday in Pipestone, beginning at 2 p.m. A Pirate win would send Windom to the final four of the Region 13C Tournament.
