Fair board members face endless battle with aging buildings

If ever there were a list of most taken-for-granted things at the Cottonwood County Fair, building maintenance would be high on list.

People walk through the fair each year, hardly giving a thought to how much work goes into taking care of buildings, updating them and making sure they are in good condition to hold the annual county fair. They are simply too busy taking in the event to think about those things.

Growing up in the 1960s as a 4-H member, Mike Hanson didn't think about building maintenance all that much. He, too, was busy showing hogs and enjoying the fair.

"Back then, we had two hog barns, a sheep and goat barn and the south commercial building," Hanson recalled. "The Jesse Oleson Pavilion was built around that time.

"On the west end, there is an old quonset building that the county now uses for storage. That was one of the fair buildings at the time."

Hanson looks at things differently these days, as president of the fair board. Building maintenance and upkeep of the four-plus acres of property are high on his list of priorities.

"The grounds are in good shape," Hanson said. "Some of the buildings need a lot of work."
